Families covered: Grenville of Buckingham, Grenville of Chandos, Grenville of Temple, Grenville of Wotton Underwood

(1) We keep to the normal spelling of Grenville for this family's name but note that Visitation uses "Greenvile" within its pedigree whilst the Harleian editor used "Greenville" in the title.
(2) VCH reports that: "Though the tradition that a Grenville was lord of Wotton before the close of the 11th century seems to be without foundation,it is likely that the connexion of this family with the parish began at an early date. Gerard de Grenville, who held three knights' fees of the honour of Giffard in 1166, died in or before 1184, when 100 marks were due from his nephew for his lands in Buckinghamshire. This nephew was probably Eustace de Grenville, who was succeeded by Richard de Grenville mentioned in connexion with Wotton in 1213 and alive in 1236. His son Eustace de Grenville was in possession in 1255 and in 1284. He was succeeded in or before 1302 by his son Richard, who was returned as sole lord of the parish in 1316, and held in 1324." We mention all that because Visitation provides a different ancestry for that last-mentioned Richard. Noting that we have (at least) one cross-reference for an early John Grenville of Wotton, and that VCH did not mention any John before Richard, provisionally we show what is given by Visitation but do so in italics for the generations for which VCH and Visitation appear to disagree.
